East Side Sushi (2014)

East Side Sushi is a US film about a single mother from a Latin American immigrant family who falls in love with Sushi and wants to master the art of preparing it. As far as that topic is concerned, it is a fairly standard story following well-known beats. A middling sort of film, but rather well-made.

The Queen of Fear (2018)

The queen of fear in this story is an actress whose self-doubt, disorganised chaos, and mild immaturity result in panic-attacks and self-isolation. This very impressive film is a sort-of slice-of-life drama with the occasional comedic moment emerging from the absurdities of this artist’s life and environment.

Roads in February (2018)

This Uruguayan-Canadian drama about a young woman returning to the country she left as a child is a bit rough around the edges, as many first-time feature-films are, but it displays good directing and cinematography as well as very good leading performances.

A Family Submerged (2018)

This Argentine drama is an unwieldy arthouse film that drove people out of my screening. The film has not much to say but takes an unnecessarily long time to say it. There are very good performances and a number of interesting elements here, but as a whole this film does not work.

The Other Side of the Street (2004)

The Other Side of the Street [O Outro Lado da Rua] tells the story of a criminal investigation of sorts, but it really is just the portrait of a lonely and bitter woman who is trapped in her isolated existence. Great performances by the core cast do not really help to make this film as a whole work.
